Local solons grace annual orientation

Hon. Rogelio J. Espina, Congressman of the Lone District of Biliran, announced during the Student's Orientation and Consultative Assembly the local government has donated Php 15 million to subsidize miscellaneous expenses for this year.

“Ngayon, wala ng mas hihigit pa sa binigay na importansiya ng gobyerno natin pagdating sa edukasyon. Kasi kayo po, lahat kayo, ay full scholars na,” Cong. Espina cheerfully addressed the students in his speech regarding the free tuition policy of the administration.

He also clarified that the said assistance will shoulder NSU students not only from Biliran but also those from other divisions in the region.Furthermore, Cong. Espina retorted that students will be granted with Php 2,000 financial assistance for miscellaneous fees and student allowances. Meanwhile, Hon. Gerard Roger Espina, Mayor of the Municipality of Naval, inspired and challenged the students to Rizal’s children – "intellectually inclined yet societally awake."

“We are all here to develop our selves. And after this, we are here to develop our community, our lives and our family,” he enthused.

Pursuant to Senate Bill 1304 known as the Free Higher Education for All Act, Naval State University along with other State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the Philippines was awarded with tuition-free scholarship grant to support students currently enrolled in this academic year.

After the confirmation has been made to appropriate Php 8 billion funding from the 2017 national budget to support the program, NSU will no longer collect tuition fees from the students. “The university is thankful for being one of the recipients of the free tuition program by the administration. It is of great help to our students to pursue and finish on their courses,” said Dr. Erwin Salvatierra, Student Affairs and Services Office (SASO) Director. According to SASO, the institution has received Php 62 million budget allocation for 2017-2018 and will be halved to subsidize two semesters. “As of the first semester, reports from the Accounting office shows the total amount of students’ tuition fees pegs at Php 17-18 million, which is way less than the allocated fund of Php 31 million. The remaining budget will be supplemented for the next semester,” Dr. Salvatierra expounded. “We are encouraging out-of-school high school graduates and returnees to enroll this 2nd semester since the budget is large enough to accommodate new applicants,” he added.

Dr. Victor Catigbe Cañezo Jr., is now the new OIC- University President of Naval State University.

Unanimously appointed by the members of the NSU- Board of Regents, Dr. Canezo will now be leading the 6-year old university towards victorious education as the new OIC-University President following the stint of OIC-President, Dr. Matias A. Bentor, Jr.

“Vic”.,37-year old native of Masagongsong, Kawayan, Biliran and the son of the late Victor Arevalo Canezo, II of Higatangan, Naval, Biliran and Lolita Catigbe Canezo of Masagongsong, Kawayan, Biliran, served as the former Acting University and Board Secretary for one (1) year and six (6) months and the Dean of the NSU- College of Education for four fruitful years.

AN ACCOMPLISHED EDUCATOR

The genesis of Dr. Canezo’s academic experience started at Masagongsong Elementary School and eventually at Kawayan National High School where he was a consistent honor student. His outstanding performances as a classroom teacher, coach, trainer, and school publication and student council adviser steered him to various managerial positions such as the Head of the Academic and Student Affairs of the Cathedral School of La Naval; the Human Resource Officer, Member Development Officer and as a Board Recorder of the Board of Directors of the Biliran Electric Cooperative (BILECO).
